Affordable canister vacuum for carpets (mainly), rugs and hardwood?

I'm looking for a good, yet low priced canister vacuum for my wife to use in our house. It would primarily be used upstairs, which is all carpeted. (Minus the bathroom).

It will be brought downstairs, where our house has rugs and hardwood flooring.
