Can steam cleaners harm hard wood floors? (e.g. warping or removing the finish)

I am buying a new home. Some rooms are carpeted and some have hard wood floors.

It appears from my reading that steam cleaners will work on carpets as well as hard wood floors but I am concerned about what the steam might do to the hard wood floors.

steam vac

My main floor is all hard wood. When I have the cleaning person come I have her use Murphy's Oil soap and a mop. When I do it myself, I use my steam mop--H2o. It works well and quick, but if there is a board that isn't sealed well it will cause it to buckle. I know where they are in my house now and until I have time to reseal them I just don't use the steam mop there. Haven't used my steam mop with GREAT frequencey though because of this concern. But so far it's fine.
