Cordless Upright Vacuum Cleaners
Light and maneuverable...

Cordless upright vacuum cleaners (sometimes called “stick” vacuum cleaners) use a powerful Lithium Ion Battery - the same kind of battery used to run laptop computers and camcorders - to run a vacuum cleaner.

Most are built to be light weight and easily transported.

We all know that vacuuming the house can mean lugging a 15 to 20 pound machine around, lifting it up stairs and shoving it behind furniture to get those hard to reach spots, all while being tethered to an electrical outlet.

Wouldn’t it be great if you had something lighter that could do the job off of a battery charge?

That's what a cordless upright vacuum cleaner enables you to do. While you won’t use it to clean up after a major disaster, for spot cleaning and routine cleaning, it's the right tool for the job.

Now, because of the current draw of the rechargeable batteries, these cordless upright vacuums don’t have high suction 12-amp motors. They usually use a less powerful motor.

This means you may have to do double coverage to get dirt and pet hair out of the carpet.

Just as with notebook manufacturers, the people who make this kind of appliance tend to be generous in discussing battery life and the amount of floor coverage you can vacuum with one of these tools.

When selecting a vacuum of this type, look into the charging mechanism and read up on how much a replacement battery will cost before you buy the machine.

As these products have definite design lifetimes, it’s possible to end up with one that uses a custom battery pack that can’t be replaced.

Recommended Cordless Upright Vacuum Cleaners

Eureka 96 B Quick Up Upright Cordless Stick Vacuum scored high marks for its light weight and overall durability.

Its battery pack, on the model that we tested, lasted about 80% as long as the manufacturer claimed, which, for battery life, is respectable.

While not suited to heavy duty cleaning, it’s more than sufficient for office or dorm use and light enough that it will, in fact, be used.

For those looking for something a bit more capable and are willing to pay a bit more for it, the Eureka EUK96D2 EZ Kleen is more robust than the 96 B Stick Cleaner and can be wall mounted for continous recharging. It’s also a little bit noisier.

Dirt Devil pretty much invented the “cordless vacuum cleaner” market with the original Dust Devil and Dirt Devil.

Their entry into the Stick Cleaner space lives up to their reputation for innovative product design.

Dirt Devil 083414 Extreme Power is an excellent upright cordless vacuum cleaner (not to mention bagless!) with a low profile for extending under furniture.

Its cleaning area, while smaller than either of the two models above, tended to do a more thorough job in our tests on the areas being vacuumed.
