Dyson DC17 Animal

My Dyson DC17 Animal vacuum great for the first six months or so. Now I have a problem with hair and dirt getting under the belt and wrapped around the gear that the belt goes around. This causes the belt to stretch and it begins to make a terrible noise.

I have sent it in twice and each time they have changed the belt and one time they changed the belt and the roller bar, which I had already done. I can use it for about 10 minutes before the belt has a bunch of dirt under it and the gear has a bunch of hair wrapped around it.

Anyone who has had to change the belt knows this isn't the easiest of operations and to get the hair out that is wrapped around the gear is a chore.

It still picks up well but to have to stop every 10 minutes and take it apart and clean it and usually change the belt is terrible. Would never recommend it again.

Same Issue
by: AidenKritch

I love my Dyson, it works great but I have just discovered today after 9 months of ownership that I need a new belt. Mine has also stretched out and is making a loud noise only when I turn on the beater bar. When vacuuming, it sounds like the beater bar has come loose and is hitting the plasting housing around it and has a loud squeal-like sound to it. It almost sounds like a skill saw or something. I guess I will start using my hand held to clean out the debree that does get caught in it. I agree, I have had problems with longer hair getting caught/wrapped around the beater bar.

clogged with fur
by: Anonymous

I totally agree with you. I just got mine out of the box, used it for 5 minutes and the noise began. I have two enormous, hairy dogs and have changed a lot of vacuum cleaner belts in my day so that's what I checked first. It's the same in all vacuums, the belt grabs the fur and twists it around the drive shaft. The problem with the Dyson is that the belt is extremely short and housed in the same area as the beater bar whereas most are longer and housed deeper in the vacuum away from all the swirling fur! I am so disappointed because in the few minutes I get out of it at a time, it works very well.

Dyson DC17
by: Carl

The Dyson DC17 Animal vacuum worked marvelously on all surfaces - when it worked. Unfortunately, I went through three of them, each of which broke down within the warranty period, before I gave up on Dyson. This was all too bad, as this machine did a superior job to my Hover Wind Tunnel.

Bottom line is that the build quality of all of these machines basically reverts to plastic junk. Definitely be warned about Dyson's quality prior to dropping this much cash.

DC17 is a PITA
by: Dave

Hey Mark,

I have 1 Shepherd/Lab mix. The dc17 does need to be cleaned everytime I use it. I will never buy another one. Pulling the brush and the belt is a pita. It does do a pretty good job and the warranty is good but that's it.

Belt Problem
by: Anonymous

I have the same problem with the belt. I have had it changed twice and I had the machine totally cleaned the first time to make sure that it would run properly. I am out of patience because it takes me longer to clean it every ten minutes then it does to vacuum the entire house!!

Only have 2 goldens. Bought a Fuller vacuum and it is working like a champ. Have thrown out my Dyson so no one else will have this terrible over priced vacuum. I still stand by my original comments. Would never reccomend or buy another Dyson!!

Ronda,

You have too many animals in your home.
Get rid of some, and life will be better.

Happy hunting!

I totally agree with you. We have 3 dogs & 2 cats. What a chore to clean the vacuum before you use it.
This was the worst investment we have ever made!
