Dyson DC18 vacuum hype

by Zuzu

I had the Dyson DC18 vacuum cleaner for almost 2 years when it completely clogged with pet hair. I took it in to my local vacuum repair shop and they told me to talk to the hand.

Apparently, what is not so well promoted about Dyson is the fact that any service must be done in Ontario. I must pack up my vacuum, send it at my expense to Ontario and wait for it to be fixed and returned to me.

When I begged them to please, please, please just try and declog my Dyson DC18, they kindly did and then told me what their experiences with Dysons have been.
In a nutshell, they are overhyped and cannot live up to their advertising. The vacuum DOES lose suction with a fuller cannister and any bagless vacuum makes a filty dusty mess when it is filling up and when being emptied.

I was directed to a few videos available on youtube, comparing the Dyson to Miele and some other models. I ended up buying a Miele canister model, with certified Hepa filter and amazing suction. I love my Miele and am now shopping my Dyson around on an internet classified site, hoping to get some return on my money.

I will heartily recommend NOT buying a Dyson to anyone who asks my opinion, but people seem to really believe the Dyson hype.

Dyson DC18 Slim Line
by: Lis Garza

I have had my Dyson for 3 years and it has been in the shop 4 times. First time the bottom for the hardwood floors got stuck, 2nd time the connection of the hose separated, 3rd time the brushes were broken and now the on and off bottom is getting stuck. Sometimes it does not turn on or off.

I have had a few vacuum cleaners and the Dyson DC18 Slim seems to have a problem every few months. It cleans very well, but taking it to the Repair Shop is a hassle. It takes them a week to repair it.

It is still under warranty, however, they charged $69.00 for new brushes. Normal wear and tear. I think 3 years is too soon for wear and tear. I certainly don't abuse this vacuum cleaner and I am the only person who uses it.

I am disappointed since I don't think this vacuum cleaner is going to last beyond its warranty of 5 years.

I have owned this Dyson for several years now. It is the best vacuum I have ever owned. It is not that hard to clean out or empty. And yes I have a long haired cat,and he really sheds . I empty the canister outside into the large can. Also you just wash the filter with cold water and let dry over night. As for as the canister part with the filtration , you can take it outside and use your water hose to clean it out. I have very thick carpet and am amazed at the very fine dust and dirt it gets out. Also if you empty it regularly when it gets to the fill line it wont clog. If you can't take a few simply steps to clean it will clog to a point. I worked customer service at a "big Box" store and saw many vacuums returned because they were clogged. Only a good cleaning will help. Some people are just too lazy and expect things to magically clean themselves. HUMMMMM!1 I wonder about people sometimes. Thanks for your time. GREAT PRODUCT My son bought his wife the roller ball . She loves it. My sister-in-law has one LOVES it my mother's friend that is 82 has one and LOVES it. Thank you Dyson. Good job

Dyson cord caught fire!
by: Holman

Ok here go's, we have have the DC 15 for about 2 years, the company has sent several replacment parts but now they refuse to help.
my wife was using the vacum and the cord caught fire and burned her hand. Dyson wont do anything
and said the cord is not covered under warranty.

We just bought a Hoover that is doing a better job for 1/3 the cost .. dyson is crap, and service is the worst we have ever seen. They said my wife was wraping the cord to tight. Ha she just hung it on the top ... DO NOT BUY A DYSON!

Dyson DC18

BUYER BEWARE!!

This vac is one of my biggest aggravations and I curse the day I bought my Dyson DC18 vacuum and got rid of my old vac.

Yes, it is bagless, if you don't mind digging out the can every time you try to empty it, and occasionally scraping out the buildup on the metal sieves inside because the holes are clogged over with home made cement (a combination of pet hair/oils and dirt).

And did anyone ever try to maneuver "the wand" cleaning tool? Like trying to eat spaghetti with a rake. This big, long, stiff tube comes out the top. You have to stand several feet away from anything you are cleaning because it is so long, and then if you are using the attachment it is just useless. It's like it came with a toddler's toy vac. Ridiculous!

The cord, nice and long but just a bit too long, or too short, to wrap it up and then attach it by the clip. The clip ALWAYS ends up at the bottom curve where it is impossible to attach it.

My Dyson DC18 has been in the shop more than any other vac I've ever owned. I'm always having to "reset" the head. It falls over all the time because the "stand up" mechanism is iffy. Hit or miss at best.

It is more maneuverable under furniture, but still not quite good enough that I don't have to get the broom out anyway.

Suction is good, but what's the point in spending all that money on something that is not really all that great?

Where the dirt reservoir attaches to the vac is always packed up with pet hair. This never stops. I have dug and dug, but there it is again next time I empty. A big wad of pet hairs sticking out of the vac where it didn't quite make it into the dirt tank.

I could go on but I don't want to dedicate any more time to this. Just wanted you to know.

Dyson dc slim 18
by: David

Have used the Dyson dc 18 vacuum for over a year, my first Dyson, machine #16 in my house, this is my daily, so easy to use, great suction, easy to empty, light weight, almost perfect.

Tools are only ok, no better and this machine is not a deep cleaner on thick carpets, must do the weekly clean with stronger beating machine. Still, love it.

Warning about Dyson DC18
by: Kathleen

Update on previous review. I am now nearing a month without my very expensive Dyson DC18 vacuum. Nobody has, nor can find the little motor which drives the brushes. I emailed the company with my dissatisfaction, and was answered with a response to call 'customer service' (which I had done previously to get their 'authorized' repair shop, you would think they would have SOME connections with dyson for parts!).

Anyway, I did call hoping to expedite the repair these 2 days before Thanksgiving! After being on hold for 7min. the agent who represents this company could not be more disinterested, could not tell me anymore than what I already knew. Total waste of time. At this point I have no hope, and have visions of my vacuum in the shape of hard earned money in a garbage heap! Take warning.

Dyson DC18
by: Kathleen

OK, Yes the Dyson DC18 is a good vacuum, great machine. I like all the features I bought it for. The Dyson works probably as well as any high end vacuum you would expect to perform.

HOWEVER, I don't know why it takes so long to get parts to replace. I am now on week three with no date in site. 'It's backordered, lady', says the official Dyson repair place they sent me to!(and they have no loners available).

Now, with 3dogs, 3kids, including my husband, Thanksgiving is next week. I have to buy another vacuum, that I neither have room for or can afford. You can weigh your options. But, for me, I will never purchase another Dyson, it's not worth it at any price.
