Eureka Altima 12 amp

by Mrs. Kim Brenneman
(Parnell, Iowa)

I post this as a warning to other buyers.

I have had the Eureka Altima 12 amp vacuum cleaner for less than a year and it is finally going to the dumpster. I say finally because it has been a pain-in-the-behind-piece-of-junk since the get go.

This vacuum had poor suction, it needed its filters cleaned out after minimal vacuuming, the bagless system is a dirty mess, and the whole thing is awkwardly weighted causing it to fall over with little cause.

I bought Eureka Altima at Target but could not buy new belts at Target. If it was convenient I would box the thing up with the new belts I ordered online and send it to Eureka.

This vac would be a huge embarrassment to the founder of Eureka. I am sorry for him and his family and the shareholders of the company.

Thanks for sharing, Kim.

I don't have much experience with the Eureka Altima vacuum but I do know that the Eureka 4870GZ is one of the best vacuums of all time based on more than 700 reviews on Amazon.com.

NOT THAT EUREKA WILL DO ANYTHING FOR YOU HOWEVER HERE IS THE 800-282-2886 EUREKA NUMBER. I EXPLAINED HOW I HAD FIGUERED OUT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE END OF THE BEATER BRUSH BEING OFF CENTERED AND ALLOWING THE BEARING TO GET CLOGGED AND NOT TURNING SO THE BELT BURNS UP, TO THEM AND THEY COULD HAVE CARED LESS.
I JUST LOVE BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF ! AND YES I GET THE ECONOMY AND SUCH BUT WHEN I MAKE A MISTAKE I ALSO MAKE SURE I DO MY BEST TO CORRECT IT.
THE BEST WE CAN IS HURT THEM IN THIER POCKET BY NOT PURCHASING ANY MORE OF THIER PRODUCTS. MAYBE THEY WILL THEN UNDERSTAND.

EUREKA ALTIMA
by: Anonymous

I TOOK THE TIME TO ANALYZE MY EUREKA'S PROBLEM. IT IS A FAULTY BEATER BRUSH, AS THE BEARING IS NOT CENTERED IN THE END OF THE BEATER BRUSH CORRECTLY IT ALLOWS DIRT TO GET IN THE BEARING AND THE BRUSH WILL NOT TURN, AND BURNS UP THE BELT. IT IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT PERIOD. I CALLED THE 800 CUSTOMER SERVICE # AND THEY COULD CARE LESS. THAT IS THE LAST EUREKA PRODUCT I WILL EVER HAVE IN THIS HOUSE. I ALSO PROMISE TO GIVE THEM THEY PUBLICITY THEY DESERVE.

Too good to be true.
by: Anonymous

Ah ha ha ha ha ...I just found one of these in the garbage room of the condo I live in. It looked quite new...so I thought hmmm must be something wrong with it...ok let's plug it in and see what happens. It turned on and the motor was like a jet engine. Anyway, my mother hasn't had a new vacuum since the old Kirby she got about 40 years ago so I thought hey...perfect for her carpets. Well I take this thing into the storage locker room and plug it in...vrooooooom and then dust is blowing every where and theres hardly any suction so I figure that the filters are plugged or somthing, check em out and nooo, they seem ok. Then I take the dust cup out and suddenly dust is falling out and getting all over me in the process. Then I notice than the suction duct above the cup is all plugged up so I dig out all the hair, evil looking dust balls and other crap. OK wow I bet it's gonna work great now...vrooooom...cough cough...dust is coming out some where but I can't tell exactly where so I turn it off. I look under neath at the beater bar...looks ok..wait a sec...this thing that's supposed to adjust the height for carpet, bare floor etc. isn't doing anything, the wheels don't go up or down ?!?!. Lesson, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

shocked by negative posts - I LOVE this vac!
by: Anonymous

I'm shocked by the negative reviews! I have the Eureka Altima 12 amp and absolutely LOVE it! we have two long haired cats and one dog - all of whom shed like MAD! I am finding a tough time finding a small cordless that keeps up with all their hair on the hard floors, but the Altima takes on the hair like a champ! Great suction and the bagless cup keeps the dirt in a nice neat cone shape which is easy to dump out! Just have to clean the filter every couple of jobs, but that's nothing for the great job it does!

I have had this Vac for OVER 2 yrs and have never had ANY problems with it. While it is not the greatest for hardwood as the beater bar still runs, but on carpet it works very, very well. I have been a pawn broker for 20ys and have tried and owned every major brand of vac's from Kirbey to Filter Queen and even Dyson (talk about a $400 piece of junk). As long as you clean the vac's filters monthly and replace them like it says in the manual then it works fine. I have 4 kids, 4 dogs and it has never left a "dust cloud" or anything close to it. Like a car needs an oil change, vacuums need maintance as well. You change you cars oil every 3000, why not clean the filters every month and replace them as the manual says. I wonder if everyone who is having problems with this Vac understands "regualr schdueled maintance"feel sorry for there cars engies.

Eureka Altima Garbage
by: Anonymous

This is the biggest piece of garbage I have ever bought. It never worked from day one. What ever it picks up, it shoots out the back spreading it every where. This machine causes allergies because it sends up a cloud of dust right in your face and all over your house. The whole machine is covered in dust after you attempt to use it. Tried it three times and then tried to take it back to where I bought it. The store won't even take it back because every one they sold was returned. They told me to call Eureka. the best place for this is the dumpster. Eureka needs to do a recall and stop selling this garbage.

Found one on the side of the road
by: Anonymous

My friend found a pretty yellow Eureka Altima on the side of the road. We went and got it and it turned on fine. The hose sucked strongly and everything seemed to work but the filters looked bad so I made the mistake of going to Walmart and getting new filters. After putting the filters in the hose sucks good as when needed to clean a car but when the hose is connected to the bottom it will not suck up any dirt. I put a newspaper page down and it would not even suck that up when I placed the vacuum on it and then picked up the vacuum. The belt is now worn and not turning the roller tonight after testing it again. The roller was turning earlier and the vacuum still would not pick up anything. Something is definitely wrong with this and I will have to go back to my tip over Kirby Heritage II.

Piece of JUNK!!!!!!
by: Walter

We bought this to replace a red Dirt Devil that had lasted for almost 12 years with major abuse, constant use and just finally wore out after more than a decade of reliable service. We bought the bagless Eureka after being steered that way by a salesman at the store. This is and has been a piece of garbage from day one. With NEW filters it will do a great job for the first 15 minutes. Then the dust goes everywhere, the built in duster will never stay seated, and the canister for the debris stays a dirty mess. The filter is washable and reuseable, but 15 mintues later is useless again. This unit only gave us about 1 month of fair service, 2 more months of hassle laden service and then finally the beater bar fell apart when one of the end cap bearing disentegrated. What a piece of junk ths way. And to think it cost approximatley 3 times what the Dirt Devil cost. Never again.

Terrible Product!
by: Wendy Wells

I realized after I left my last comment that I accidentally left it on five stars...it needs to have ZERO stars! This is a terrible product line that should be recalled and consumers given a credit toward a better model vacuum. It falls over, the "claw" is worthless and it falls off all of the time, the roller gets clogged with pet hair, the suction is minimal, and the attachments leave much to be desired. I wish I'd have stuck with Hoover.

Run from Eureka Altima
by: DHolmes

I have not been able to really "believe in" this vacuum cleaner. Yes, I have 2 dogs, a cat, and a teenager - which isn't easy for a vacuum - but the pet hair gets stuck too easily in the funnel just prior to settling in the dirt cup. The dirt cup is messy, and there is always some spilled dust/dirt. Now for the 2nd time the brush roller needs replaced since the belt nearly burned the vacuum up. Not a fan - run from this model

$99--beats Oreck $400
by: Mike

I purchased my vacuum to use in my foreclosure services business (we vacuum after emptying houses of all trash Etc left behind). After assembling it ,I tried it on my home floors 1st.
I could not believe how much this unit picked up out of the carpet (my wife had used her Oreck the day before). When my wife saw the results, she took it for a spin & was totally in awe of the performance(She tried to confiscate the vacuum from me).Yes ,it does need to be cleaned frequently, but the more often you use it the less often you need to clean it as it has been picking up the dirt your other vacuum left behind.
HINT--vacuum more than once a week for better results.

Funny
by: Anonymous

I was online trying to find a reason for the high-pitched noise our Altima is making now - it sounds like (from one of the commenters here and on other sites) this is not uncommon with this vacuum.
Since I don't mind the frequent maintenance on this piece of equipment and I think it does a sufficient job of cleaning (I only use it on carpet and have never used the dust wand attachment), I am not overly frustrated by the vacuum as others here are. I think some of the dirt dumping might be due to the maintenance requirements (for instance, when I don't clean out the plastic funnel-type thing up inside the vacuum, it does start dumping dust). However, the loud noise is very annoying and I am disappointed to learn that many people have issues with perennial belt replacement and smoking. (I have to say, I am impressed with the amount of dirt this thing gets up!)

Clean the Filters!
by: Anonymous

I have had the Eureka Altima for over a year. I bought it for about $98.00 at Walmart. I, too, was dissatisfied at first but I realized that I must take the manufacturer's advice seriously and clean the filters regularly. After every second or third use I remove the foam filter from the top of the vacuum and spray both foam and fabric filters clean and allow them to dry. Also the plastic piece above the dust cup needs to be removed and cleaned regularly. The hose also clogged and had to be removed and cleaned out, but that only happened once. I removed and by-passed the dust wand attachment which I thought was a good idea poorly executed.
Yes, this vacuum does require a bit more maintenance than many others, but it, when properly maintained, does a fine job. And remember- it was under 100 bucks!

I bought this vacuum a little less than a year ago. I had no problems with the suction at first. It's just that after the first few uses-if you want it to suck- you have to clean the foam rubber filter every time and wait for it to dry which is a pain in the butt. It smokes for no reason. I keep the dirt cup cleaned out. I keep the beater bar clean. I checked the belt to see if that was the problem it was fine. I bought at new Hepa filter which by the way they sell the Helpa filter for these at Wal-Mart and also the belts. Today everything was cleaned and no blockages in the hoses and still it smokes. I give up. Wasted money.

It's nice to know I'm not alone and thinking something's wrong with my vacuuming skills. This Eureka Altima serves me no purpose and is more of a hassle than not vacuuming at all. My husband bought this for the upstairs (since we are not so fortunate to have central vacuuming like the "Jones'"). Our other vacuum, a Hoover upright, is about 10 years older and does what the Eureka could never do...clean. Don't waste your time, energy OR money on this piece of garbage. The filters and "bagless" canister are conduits of redistributed dirt and allergens. I'm going back to the old fashioned bagged vacuums. Can we all sue to get our money back?

by: Anonymous

The point isnt that you have to empty the dirt cup every few minutes--the point is that you have to empty the dirt cup, wash and dry hepa filter, clean upper fiber filter , unscrew and clean upper plastic filter, unattach and bang the crud out of the hose and then put everything back together everytime you clean. The whole project takes longer than the vaccuuming itself. If you dont do this every few minuts the whole thing stops working.

Works well for me, I LIKE IT
by: Got It Free

Found this vacuum in the garbage pile out behind our apartment building. It was FULL of dirt. Bin was full to the top and overflowing, the filter had a half inch of matted crud on it, the hose was clogged with huge clumps of dog hair. The beater brush was wound so tightly around with carpet fibre it would hardly turn.
Spent a half hour taking it apart and cleaning it and now it works so well, I'm giving my old one (Dirt Devil Jaguar, almost new) to the Salvation Army. Sucks up way more stuff than my old one. Yes, yes, I know you have to empty the bucket after every cleaning but so what? That just shows you how well it works. It picks up dirt so one must dispose of the dirt by EMPTYING THE HOLDING BIN. What's so alien about that concept? Some folks think you should only have to empty it once every 10 cleanings or so. Get a grip!

I agree completely with Kim--What a pain in the you know what!!!. Looked good on the shelf--hepa filter ,bagless and all but after you vaccuum only for a few minutes it looses suction and you have to completely disassemble the dust cup, three filters and often the hose to get it to suck properly again. It clogs easily and the one I bought broke after only a few weeks--if the store would have let me I would have exchanged it for a different kind but since I did not have a recipt they would only do an even exchange--the second one was just as bad as the first. DO NOT BUY!!! What a waste of money.
