Hoover vacuum cleaners are one of the top vacuum brands in the world. Learn about their history,
best models and what to expect from a Hoover vacuum if you choose to get one.
What is now known as the upright vacuum cleaner started with James Spangler's invention of the suction sweeper in 1907.
Household cleaning history was made when he gave one to his cousin, Susan Hoover, wife of William ‘Boss' Hoover.
A year after Susan received Spangler's suction sweeper, Hoover partnered with Spangler and together they created the machine that has evolved into the many different types of vacuum cleaners we rely upon so heavily today.
Beater bars, which literally beat the dirt out of carpets and rugs paired with a brush that helped guide the loose dirt into the vacuum were introduced in 1926.
The beater bar was just the first of many Hoover innovations that set the standard for all other vacuum manufacturers, such as the on board light, the disposable bag and the ability to hold all of the attachments on the housing unit. By the end of the 1930s, Hoover was the largest selling vacuum cleaner in the United States.
Why Hoover Vacuum Cleaners?
For more than 100 years, the Hoover name has represented affordable excellence in floor care. Hoover offers a wide range of floor care equipment - some with bags and some bagless models.
Affordability – With prices ranging from $30 for the handheld Hoover Air Express to $400 for the top of the line Platinum Collection Cyclonic Bagless Cyclonic vacuum, a Hoover vacuum cleaner can easily fit any household budget.
Suction Power – The common feature in all categories is the high marks they get for powerful suction, which is, after all, one of the most critical things one looks for when in the market for a new vacuum cleaner.
Variety – As a trendsetter in floor care, Hoover is one of the most trusted manufacturers of vacuums, and carpet cleaners.
Types Of Hoover Vacuums
Hoover is almost synonymus with the term upright vacuum cleaner as they've been the leader in the upright category for many years. But the company has not rested on their laurels and have been very active also in the canister, stick and handheld types of vacuums in the recent history.
Hoover Upright Vacuum Cleaners
Hoover uprights have a strong reputation for getting dirt out of the deepest pile as well as leaving hard floors clean as a whistle.
It is this versatility that makes the Hoover upright an excellent choice for the home that has more carpet than hard floors.
Hoover upright vacuum cleaners are best known for their exceptional suction power and wide bases, which make cleaning carpets and floors fast and efficient.
The extra long cords and extension hoses are added features that make it easy to clean floors and high places alike.
Hoover Platinum UH30010COM is a unique upright vacuum cleaner that has a canister vacuum for cleaning stairs and other hard to reach areas. Although the upright model proved excellent in our tests, we weren't so impressed with the canister.
The Hoover Windtunnel T-Series Rewind UH70120 is the most affordable vacuum we've tested that has a true HEPA filtration. The Hoover Rewind releases no dust particles back in the air but we recommend it only for cleaning carpeted flooring.
Best for: cleaning rugs and carpets. Since the brush bar can not be turned off, we do not recommend this machine for hard surface floors.
The Hoover Windtunnel Air UH70400 bagless vacuum does a few things really well and a few things not so well. It is very lightweight, cleans pet hair really well and has HEPA filtration which is very useful for allergy sufferers. On the other hand it doesn't clean the edges well and it has lower suction on the left side of the cleaning head.
Best for: pet hair cleaning, allergy and asthma sufferers, does a good job on hardflooring and carpets.
You will be amazed at the amount of dirt that the SteamVac All Terrain and Dual V get out of your carpets and rugs. These two powerful machines not only clean your carpets, but dry them as well. They have three different cleaning modes – spill clean up; gentle scrub for those delicate fabrics fine, hand made rugs; and power scrub for tougher materials.
Best for: deep cleaning of all types of carpeting and rugs.
The Hoover F5914-900 Steam Vac with Clean Surge brings professional cleaning technology to your home with its Spin Scrub Multiple Rotating Brush System. It is equipped with two separate reservoir tanks – one for the cleaning solution and water and the other for the dirty water that is extracted from your rugs and upholstery as they are being cleaned.
Best for: cleaning hard surfaces. The spin brushes and squeegee are excellent when it comes to scrubbing and drying tile hard surface floors in just a little bit of time.
This versatile floor cleaner makes it possible for you to vacuum, mop, scrub and dry your floors with just one machine. Dual tank technology keep the clean water and cleaning solution separate from the dirty water that is returned to the machine. It has no belts that could wear out or break.
Best for: hard floor surfaces of all types.
Hoover Canister Vacuums
The canister vacuum moves easily from one room to another in homes that have more hard floor surfaces than carpets or rugs. Each Hoover canister vac is equipped with a stretch hose and a full compliment of accessories that make it possible for the user to get the job done and get it done right.
Hoover Stick Vacuums
The Hoover lightweight stick vacuum will never replace a regular deep cleaner, but it is excellent for quick pick ups between regular cleanings. Stick vacs are ideal for light jobs, and excellent replacements for the old broom and dust pan.
Hoover stick vacs are available in both corded and cordless models. They have a longer than usual battery life, are easy to maneuver, lightweight and powerful enough to clean hard floor surfaces as well as carpets and area rugs.
The Hoover LINX BH50010 Cordless stick vacuum maneuvers very easy, cleans carpeting and hardflooring well and it's cordless - so there's no need to plug in the cord in each room. It doesn't have good filtration and it's messy to empty. Can be a nice addition for cleaning small rooms.
Best for: smaller rooms and apartments, not suited for allergy sufferers.
Hoover Hand Vacuums
Cordless hand held vacuums are the perfect solution for those little accidents that happen anywhere in the home, garage, workshop or nursery. They are compact and powerful and the perfect companion on a camping trip.
The suction power and extended battery life of Hoover handheld vacuums are excellent features to consider when looking for something to get rid of pet hair on upholstered furniture.
The Hoover Platinum LINX Pet BH50030 Cordless is good to have around for cleaning both carpeted and hard floor surfaces alike. The three hour battery life is a definite plus when compared with many other hand held vacuums. The three different pet hair tools are a major advantage for any household where a pet lover might reside.
Best for: upholstered furniture, mattresses and drapes.
The Hoover LINX BH50015 is an older handheld vacuum that was succeeded by the improved BH50030 which we also reviewed. While the BH50015 does a good job cleaning carpeting and hardfloors, we recommend that you take a look at the BH50030 which we rated 4.5 stars - the same as many happy customers on Amazon.com.
Best for: small areas of carpets and hardflooring.
