An imaginative janitor, looking for an answer to a problem, was the seed that germinated to become The
Hoover Vacuum.
In 1907, Murray Spangler came up with a device, using a tin box, a pillow, a broom handle and a fan,
that pull the dust away from him as he swept.
He called it a "suction sweeper" and was so excited about his invention that he began looking for
someone to help him put it into production.
He found W.H. Boss Hoover. Hoover, who had a shop that manufactured leather items, saw the potential in
Spangler's invention as well.
Soon the two men were working side by side making vacuum cleaners in the corner of Hoover's shop. In
order to sell the product, Hoover decided to place the vacuum in highly regarded stores, where he allowed
the managers of the stores to earn a commission on each sale.
The store could become a dealer if they wanted to and were able to do well selling the vacuum cleaners. Hoover vacuum cleaners are still distributed and sold this same way today.
Hoover Invented a Number of Standard Vacuum Cleaner Features
Hoover's engineers were the ones who invented the beater bar, a standard on many vacuum cleaners today.
This significant development combined suction with a metal bar that beat the carpet to release the dirt
that was then sucked up. The vacuum was able to loosen the dirt from the carpet and remove more dirt than
vacuums were able to do previously.
They were also the first to develop and use disposable paper bags, something we all take for granted
now. Other features introduced by Hoover vacuum cleaners were the front headlight, the side-mounted hose
and the self-propelling vacuum.
Hoover has always set the standard within the vacuum industry with its quality, high-performing product
line. They offer vacuums for hard floors, canister vacuums and uprights.
The Hoover vacuum cleaner line includes models for commercial and residential use:
- Hoover Upright - The upright vacuum has a unique bagless Hoover Wind Tunnel technology that creates a suction starting close to the ground thereby trapping dust and particles
before they can escape back into the air. It also incorporates a HEPA filter to remove allergens.
- Canister Vacuums - The Hoover canister vacuums also use the Wind Tunnel technology.
- Hard Floor Cleaners - The Hoover FloorMate cleans hard floor surfaces with their patented
SpinScrub that uses brushes to clean the surface.
