Kirby Generation 3 Vacuum

by Diana
(Copperas Cove, TX)

I've had the Kirby Generation 3 vacuum cleaner since 1991 along with the shampooer. I love it.

I bought it while stationed in Hawaii... It has since moved to Ky, Ga, SC, Germany and now TX over the past 17 years. It still works great.

Only thing I plan on doing is buying a newer model. And Kirby is the only vacuum cleaner dealer that will take trade ins... And give you awesome prices for old Kirby models.

Wow, Diana! That's one sturdy vacuum you have!

17 years is a long period so thanks for sharing the story of how your Kirby Gen 3 model not only survived so long but is actually still working well.

By the way, Kirby is actively promoting only their Sentria model on their website.

I am not sure if in the "offline world" they still sell Generation 5 or 6...

Update
by: Anonymous

Well, I have finally upgraded to a Sentria.. 2 months after my last posting. It works great. The Kirby peeps were amazed at how well my old one worked as I have kept up maintenance on it. I told them the main reason I was upgrading was because I knew the motor needed some maintenance but I couldn't access it to clean it or anything. And I was ready to upgrade.

They take the old ones and clean and refurbish and GIVE them to places like Battered Wives Shelters and such. They gave me an awsome deal for my trade so I'm happy. The new Sentry works great!!

For the refurbished
by: Diana

In 17 years I have replaced the brush 3 times and I keep usually 2 belts on hand. I replace those about every 2 years. I clean my brush once a month, as I have long hair and it gets everywhere. The hose is easy to attach and my boys have never had a problem doing it. I go here http://www.thevacuumcenter.com/kirby-c-130.html to order bags and belts and such.

Only major part I have ever had to replace was the fly wheel (that part you see that spins when you take the brush housing off before you attach the hose) and it cost me a total of $60 to get it replaced along with purchasing extra bags and 2 belts to have on hand.

I never really trust much of anything that has been REBUILT.. as they never really work as well.

I guess I am lucky, with simple maintainence and upkeep, mine has been going strong for so long.

Kirby Gen. 3 so-so at best
by: Anonymous

We bought a Kirby Gen 3 after it was re-furbished by a shop. It worked reasonably well, but it has needed repairs and/or overhauls every 3 years or so, and it is NOT easy to use. It is a bear to get my girls' hair out of the brush, the belt softens and stretches and melts once in a while (due to hair, in part) and has to be replaced, along with the brush itself a couple of times. And since not all stores/ shops carry the parts, it can be a pain to find replacements. It is not an easy machine to switch over to hose use - the kids don't seem to be able to manage it at all. Replacing the bag would be OK, if only I didn't keep finding dust and dirt and hair inside the outer cover which then needs to be vacuumed out!!!?! It's high profile means it cannot get under sofas or other furniture with legs, and its edge suction is non-existent. I am trying to convince my wife it is not worth repairing - did I convince you?
