Oreck Platinum

I need a vacuum. My husband and I have been to the Oreck store and decided on the Platinum because it is relatively quiet and because we have mostly wood floors and it is easy for me to take up and down the stairs.

I frankly am choking on the price. My husband says its the last vacuum we will ever buy but I'm not convinced.

Can someone convince me?

I love my Oreck so much I bought two. I have 3 dags and 2 cats and it does an amazing job. The price was the best out there and I love the ability to take it in once a year to be serviced.
Very light weight and gets it done. I feel so sorry for these people that must have gotten "lemons" and bad service obviously.

I was in the Oreck store yesterday, 4/30/09 and this vacuum is on sale till the 3rd of May for $399 without the side canister. Who needs all the crap, I'll will get used once or twice then sit in the closet getting in the way. I have been researching vacuum's for the past month and even though this vacuum is very ugly, I feel it is the best one for the price. With the warranty, you can bring it in once a yr for free for a cleaning, free bag, etc. I say GO FOR IT!!

I paid $599 for mine...it has a 10 year warranty - and annual checkups AT NO COST. I have excessive animal hair in my house - both dogs and cats and long carpet, hardward floors, steps and tiles and it is wonderful on all of them. The handheld that comes with it gets in all the tight spaces and behind sofas etc and is just too easy to use to complain about the upright now having onboard tools. Go for it!

Oreck not at the top of my list

I've had my Oreck XL for over 10 years. While it is convenient to leave out and use for touch ups, it isn't my favorite, and definately my last choice for a thorough cleaning. I prefer a vaccum with a hose attachment for corners and behind unmovable furniture, and this doesn't have any.

It is also fairly high maintenance, with recommended maintenance schedules. These are costly, too. Right now, mine needs a major overhaul, which will probably cost about what I paid for it in the first place, and I'm continuing to use it until it can't be used. I have a Roomba and a caniser vac in addition, and tend to use either of those before the Oreck.
