Oreck XL

by Kathy
(Encino, California, USA)

My Oreck has finally broken down after 15 years, but I must tell you it was 15 very good years. Why do I like it? basically it cleans well on carpets and hardwood floors, has a good filter to keep anything coming back into the air, and it is lightweight. I use to have a very heavy, VERY expensive brand. It did clean well, but it was so heavy, and it had to have parts replaced from time to time.

The Oreck is a simple machine with not many parts to break down. I don't like having to replace the belts about twice a year. I prefer that it has a bag to collect the dirt. My old machine was bagless. It is less expensive not to have a bag, but much dirtier to clean out your vacuum and dump the dirt.

I am most likely going to buy an Oreck again, but there are so many models these days, that I can't decide which one to purchase.

Warranty on XL
by: Kathy

When I bought my Oreck XL, I sent in the warranty card, and wrote "gift" on it. You may be correct, but from what I heard, as long as they have the warranty card on record, they will honor it. I will let you know in one year!

Why do we all feel so differently?
by: Kathy

I find it fascinating how we all have such different feelings about the Oreck. I wonder if the vacuum changes from model to model or year to year. I was always been happy with my old Oreck XL and my new XL Platinum seems fine too. A tip for all you, is to look on Ebay for purchasing Oreck, if that is the vacuum you decide to buy. There seems to be lots of offers there for brand new Orecks. I saved over $200.00 from the Oreck Company price, and there is no tax! My warranty card was included with the 10, once a year, free check ups. My new Oreck came in orginally packaging, but it did not come with the extra handvac. (I still have my old handvac from the original Oreck I bought 15 years ago). There are LOTS of Orecks for sale on Ebay..I, of course would check the details of what you are getting and not getting with your Oreck on Ebay. I would check the sellers ratings, and never buy a used Oreck on Ebay.

Seems we either all love or hate the Oreck!

Oreck Doesn't Work
by: Anonymous

We have had our Oreck for 3 years. In the beginning we were pleased. Picked up the nap in the carpet, easy to push. Seemed to work like you'd expect. But before too long the honeymoon was over. The cord was coming out at the handle, so it would work sporatcally, if you moved in a certain way, it cut off. They did fix it at one of our annual check ups. Noticed the pick up was getting worse. At next check up was charged for a clog that they unclogged. We had a Hoover for over 20 years, and didn't have to maintain it the way we have to this Oreck. We are constantly having to unclog it only to have it happen again. We do not have any crazy vacuuming requirements...4 people and a dog (that doesn't shed much). We are totally disgusted in this vacuum, and have resigned to getting a new one, perhaps Dyson? Only 3 years for almost $700.....not good.

Oreck vs. Dyson
by: Anonymous

If you're talking to me about my 2004 Oreck, yes we have change more belts in this vacuum cleaner than I even care to think about. It gets annual service, we keep it as clean as possible and it still doesn't really do what we need it to do.

Case in point, I recently purchased a Dyson Animal and used it one day after vacuuming with the Oreck. The dog fur that came out of the carpet was simply amazing which the Oreck didn't pick up!

Oreck might be good for a quick vac but that Dyson Animal is where it's at for the real vacuuming.

Oreck defines 'vacuum'
by: Brad

I have had an Oreck XL ultra upright for nearly a year. I am more pleased with my vacuum each time I use it. People's experiences are different, of course, but I find it curious that some speak so poorly of Oreck. I went through 4 vacuums in 5 years before I bought my Oreck. FIVE (5) different vacuums, in an effort to prevent me from spending what I thought to be, initially, a rediculous amount for what an Oreck cost. I learned the hard way. I could now own 3 Orecks given what was spent on those vacuums and corresponding repairs, filters and supplies. I was a pet owner up until just a few months ago - a long hair cat that shed much and often that I had to vacuum each day if I wanted my home to a basic standard of clean. With the oreck, I vacuumed every other day and never once had to clean fur out of the brush roll. Never.

Although none of the former vacuums I owned did a poor job, none of them comes close to the level of performance of my Oreck. There are so many advantages to an Oreck besides just a cleaner home. The more recent Orecks conserve energy without compromising power. That's brilliant - the motor in my Oreck is far less noisy than any other vacuum on the market, point blank. My cat use to run in fear each time any other vacuum came on. I'll never forget the true test of that Oreck (as far as sound went) when I brough it home and turned it on to the first speed. The cat didn't even turn to look and see what was making noise. I turned it up to the second speed, she then noticed, but she didn't take off 90MPH up the stairs...she just laid there, as I vacuumed. Then, certain portions of some of my area rugs had embedded cat fur that I had just resigned to live with. The Oreck passed over it and it was gone. This is not to mention it raising my carpet fibers close to their original shape. The life of my carpet is obviously enhanced simply by having this Oreck. The filtration in this vacuum is brilliant, also. I have dusted far less (I have glass tops) in this last year, and I do NOT miss having to stragegically dump a collection container in an effort to prevent dust and debris from going back into the air. I do not miss spending 20-30 dollars on a basic HEPA filter....when you have an Oreck with filter bags, you don't need that mess, frankly. Changing the bag is easy.

Too, I do not like changing belts, but it must be done. I have never changed a belt with more ease than on my Oreck. I was hesitant to do it (because of past experiences) but this was effortless. A side plate comes off, and you just change it. Whether people 'think' those included services are pointless, they are not. They clean the vac inside and out and practically restore it to new condition, they replace the belt, too. I have never been bothered by taking care of such things that are not easy for me to come by in the first place.

Oreck XL21
by: Anonymous

We also have an Oreck XL21 purchased in 2004 and I hate it. Oh it worked well in the beginning but the constant need to change the belts, clean the roller which is wood and a pain isn't worth the price nor is the so-called 21 year warranty.

I don't even think the free services are worth it.

We have two dogs and the Oreck picks up the fur ok but it stays stuck in the roller brush.

Don't think I'd buy another Oreck again.

My experience with Oreck Is Different.
by: Anonymous

Did you ever take your lousy Oreck in to have it checked out? Did you replace the belt regularly? I have to say that I never had the problems you say you had. Mine worked very well for 15 years. Obviously, you had a lemon Oreck machine. I know I was pleased with mine, and will be buying a new one soon!

Oreck XL
by: Frank

We have had the Oreck XL vacuum for five years. We paid around $500. Lets put it this way it flat doesn't work.

Oh yeah it makes a noise when you turn it on but it just laughs at a clump of dog hair. Or should I say the dog hair laughs at it. Mr Oreck if thats his real name should be ashamed of himself.

We moved into our brand new home with brand new carpet about three years ago. We have two dogs. We have a medium to low shag like carpet. We vacuum weekly. We clean the carpet every 6 mo. After the last cleaning we noticed a very funcky odor for weeks after. We kept feeling the Oreck wasn't doing a good job.

We broke down and bought a bissell lift up pet vacuum last week. $149 with our Bed and Bath 20% off coupon, thanks to the wife. Oh my god. What a difference. We vacuumed a quarter of the house and filled the easy to remove canister with dirt and pet hair. Mostly pet hair.

Another quarter another full canister and so on and so on. Then we vacuumed the whole place again. Same thing. We continue to vacuum over and over and keep coming up with dog hair filled containers. The carpet that we thought we would need to replace now looks almost brand new.

Traffic areas that seemed completely wasted standup and are soft to your feet. We have a full trash can of dog hair and dirt. Our house used to have a funny stale odor which has completely disappeared. We now know the funny odor after cleaning was wet dog hair.

Down with Oreck up with Bissell. Mr. Oreck bend over I would like to make a return. I may sound bitter however I am so pleased with the Bissell and our now clean carpet.
