The Panasonic Eureka vacuum cleaner has worked very well for us. We have had it for 10 years.

You can disengage the beater bar so that you can clean hardwood floors without damaging them. The Eureka is very powerful and cleans carpet and wood floors very well.

My only complaint through the years is how much it weighs. The weight of the vacuum makes cleaning stairs difficult.
