Vacuum Cleaner Belts Plan in advance...
The first time when you start thinking about vacuum cleaner belts is when they stop working.
Before that you were oblivious to the fact that they even existed, weren’t you?
Anyway, let’s see what a vacuum cleaner belt is and what you should look for when you choose a new vacuum for your home, office or industrial areas.
When you decide to buy a vacuum cleaner, you typically just go to the store, select the one which catches our eye (and suits you wallet…) and bring it home. The last thing on your mind are vacuum cleaner belts and their characteristics.
You just choose a familiar brand like Hoover, Kirby or Eureka and buy the vacuum cleaner – maybe because your friend recommended it or someone told you good things about a certain brand.
The proper way to go about the whole thing is to plan your buying. You first need to assess what kind of vacuum cleaner you need; - Does the vacuum cleaner suit your needs?
- Are the components of the vacuum reliable and durable?
If you answered both questions with yes, then it’s time for shopping…
You need to understand the fact that not all vacuum cleaners are the same and that there are differences; and vacuum cleaner belts are no different. They are just components of the entire package.
There are basically three kinds of belts – flat belts, round belts and geared belts. When we talk about vacuum cleaner belts we mostly relate them to durability.
But we tend to either ignore or are just unaware of the fact that a vacuum cleaner belt can also be crucial to the performance of the machine.
The round belts were the earliest ones that were used in vacuum cleaners. They are not great when it comes to performance.
They are placed where all your dirt and debris gets in which means that they are under constant friction and wear out quickly. It also puts more stress on the components of the cleaner.
These belts have gone almost redundant these days although some domestic models still have them. The average lifespan of such belts can at best be three to four months.
The round belts were later replaced by flat belts. As the technology improved we moved from natural rubber compounds to synthetic materials. The flat belts are today the most common ones that we will find in domestic vacuum cleaners. They are much more durable than the round ones and the cleaning of the dirt and debris is also better as the machine doesn’t jump around that much.
However, the most improved version of vacuum cleaner belts till date are the geared or the toothed belts. These belts don’t slip which allows better cleaning of the surfaces as the debris gets easily picked up and removed.
These belts are also very durable and one can last for years if the machine is properly handled. Though not that common in domestic vacuum cleaners it has made quite a headway when it comes to commercial vacuum cleaners.
So, what sense can you make of all this?
Go for a cleaner that comes with geared belts. If you don’t find one available, or they are too expensive for your budget, then at least settle for a flat belt vacuum cleaner.
Investing on round belt vacuum cleaners these days is as good as throwing away your money.
