Our In-Depth Review
Design
The Dyson DC59 vacuum cleaner feels a lot like your average cordless drill when you grip it, just with a giant wand nozzle sticking out the front.
The grip is very comfortable, but it can get a bit tiring for your hand after 20 to 30 minutes of vacuuming.
Still, the DC59 cordless cleaner weighs less than 5 pounds, so you can carry it comfortably until the battery life runs out.
With the 4-foot wand, there’s no need to bend your back to vacuum the floor.
Plus, with the multiple nozzles, you can get between couch cushions and under the sofa with ease. No matter where your pet has shed, you can get that hair up with ease.
The suction power in this bad boy is three times that of the competing/older models, so you’ll find that it makes getting your house clean and hair-free a cinch!
If you run it on full power, you’ll drain the battery, so it’s better to run it on the standard mode rather than using it in “Boost Mode”. The vacuum cleaner is supremely versatile and very easy to use.
Performance / Using the Dyson DC59
Performance on Hard Floors
Thanks to the lightweight design of the vacuum cleaner, you can easily get any hardwood floors clean. It feels lot like using a Swiffer, but it’s far more effective at getting up the dirt. Considering that is has three times the suction power of most handheld vacuums, it makes cleaning easy.
The width of the motor head (just 10 inches) can make it a bit annoying if you have to cover a lot of ground, but you’ll only need to go over them once to suck up all the dirt and dust. Many reviewers have commented on what a great job it does on hardwood floors.
Performance on Carpets
Even with deep shag carpets, you’ll find that the Dyson DC59 does a good job. You may have to run over the carpets a time or two extra, but you’ll get the job done with plenty of time to spare.
It doesn’t come with the bristle brush for cleaning carpets, but the mini motorized tool has its own smaller version of the brush attachment. It makes it easier to clean carpets and upholstery, and getting rid of pet hair.
Performance on Rugs
The suction power on this vacuum cleaner is strong enough to suck up all of the dust and dirt, but without sucking up your area rugs or throw rugs.
You won’t have to worry about re-organizing the house, as your rugs won’t be pulled out of place by the vacuum cleaner. The lightweight design makes it very easy to go over the rug from all angles, ensuring maximum cleaning power!
Edge Cleaning
Thanks to the edge cleaner tool that comes with the vacuum cleaner, you can get any edges easily. Even cleaning the corners of your ceiling will be easy, thanks to the fact that the vacuum cleaner is so lightweight. Seeing as it’s cordless, you can be standing on a ladder without worrying about stretching the hose or extension cord.
Ease of Use
The Dyson DC59 is the epitome of “easy to use”. After all, it’s a lightweight little handheld vacuum cleaner that you can carry around anywhere, and the fact that it has no cord makes it easy to use both indoors and outdoors.
It even comes with its own docking station, which can be installed in your cleaning closet to give you an easily-accessible place to hang up the vacuum cleaner when it’s done.
Getting Started
The vacuum cleaner requires very little in the way of assembly. Simply remove the handheld vacuum cleaner from its box, connect the wand, choose your vacuum tool, and start cleaning! Less than a minute is required to get started with this bad boy.
Maneuverability
Have you ever worked with a cordless drill? That’s how easy this vacuum cleaner is to maneuver when the wand is removed. It’s a bit heavier with the wand attached, but compared to your average vacuum cleaner, it’s way easier to maneuver. It’s even designed to be equally comfortable for both roof and floor cleaning.
Noise
This machine is about average for a handheld vacuum cleaner when it comes to noise. You may not be able to talk at a normal volume when it’s running, but you can easily listen to music without worrying about it being drowned out.
Ease of Use on Stairs
Yet another great reason to go cordless! With regular vacuums, you always have to worry about the base of the vacuum cleaner being on solid ground, the hose being pulled too tight, or running out of cord.
This bad boy is cordless, so there’s no need to worry about any of those issues. You can even remove the wand and use the vacuum directly for maximum control over cleaning.
Maintenance
One drawback to the Dyson DC59 is that it has a very small dirt canister. It operates without a bag, so you have to remove the canister and empty it once it is full.
This happens more often than you might like, and you’ll find that you’ll have to make two or three trips to the garbage can when vacuuming your entire house.
Still, keeping the machine in good order is very easy, and you’ll find that it will very rarely break down. The battery may need to be replaced after a few years, but that’s common with all battery-operated devices.
Value For Money
The Dyson DC59 costs $399, a pretty steep price considering that it’s a handheld cordless vacuum cleaner. However, when you compare it to the efficiency of the average vacuum cleaner, you get all the suction power with WAY more convenience. You’re getting pretty good value for your money, though the price could be a bit lower.
Final Vacuum Verdict
If your goal is to find a lightweight vacuum that gets the job done in as little time as possible, this is the machine for you. Not only will it be efficient at sucking up dust like a cyclone, but it is lightweight and supremely versatile.
The Dyson DC59 is a bit pricey and the battery life could stand an upgrade, yet that doesn’t stop it from being one effective vacuum cleaner. It will get animal hair off of any furniture or car seat, and will allow you to vacuum hardwood and carpeted floors with equal ease.
Best of all, it’s designed even for taller users, so there’s no need to bend over as you vacuum your floors, and it’s 100% cordless for your convenience.
